Emotional Trauma

Emotional Trauma

Life can be cruel. Sometimes bad things happen to good people and it takes time and support to recover from the pain and emotional distress. It is important to remember that, however long ago you experienced the traumatic event in your life, you are strong enough to reach a state of acceptance.

Emotional trauma can be caused by a single event, a car accident or bereavement, or from a sustained period of stress such as a long illness or an abusive relationship. People react in all sorts of ways to trauma and no two experiences can be compared.  Whatever your reaction, you must be assured that it is a normal reaction to an abnormal situation. The symptoms of trauma can display in many ways either emotionally (feelings of anger, shock, guilt, confusion, fear and isolation among others) and physically (including insomnia, nightmares, fatigue, agitation and muscular aches).

You will be able to recover from this heart-breaking and stressful time, but you must take things at your own pace. It is a common reaction to cut yourself off from the world around you after a traumatic event and not to seek out help and support.  Although some people deal with trauma by visiting counsellers, psychoanalysts and support groups which are all valuable sources of help, we hope to be able to complement these professional services by being there as a supporting guide to listen to you and support you at this distressing time.
